A Mason Jar Drawing. Step By Step Tutorial.

Hey friend!

Today I’m starting to show basic shapes and techniques in pencil. The main thing in the drawing is understanding basic shapes and techniques. Developing as an artist, you definitely need to know how to correctly and simply draw basic shapes using the rules and laws of making shapes and perspectives. I already showed a little how to do perspective when we drew lavender fields.

Ok, now I’ll teach you how to draws a mason jar. I’m going to show you how to draw ellipses in the right way. All you need is patience, time, and attention to detail.

Knowing the basics, you can draw cups, vases, and bottles. Over time, I will show you how to draw each individual element in detail. Stay tuned.
For drawing, you just need a pencil, eraser, paper. And a ruler for your convenience (but you can do without it). You can draw on any paper as you want and then transfer it to watercolor paper using tracing paper or carbon paper.

I tried to break down my steps in as much detail as possible and give captions to them. So if you’re ready.

Let’s dive in!

Supplies you’ll need:

  • 1. Watercolor paper 300 gsm (140lb) if it is a sketch for work. Otherwise, use another paper that you have.
  • 2. Pencil HB or 2B.
  • 3. Eraser
  • 4. Ruler

Here are step-by-step instructions.

1. First of all, draw a middle straight line, an axis. Try not to press hard on the pencil, then it will be difficult to erase such lines and you can get confused where which line is. Hold the pencil in your hand freely and lightly, do not squeeze your hand tightly and relax. You get everything. Draw the bottom and top lines. Check the straightness of the lines, use an eraser and maybe a ruler. I check for straight lines several times and correct inaccuracies if it’s necessary. Also try to keep the paper straight in front of you, sit comfortably at the table and your elbows were not in the air, but on the table. Okay, let’s keep going.

2. Next steps. Draw ellipse lines at an even distance from the axis and also straight, you can check the distance with a pencil as well. Mark the width of the first ellipse (top jar’s mouth), the top width should be equal to the bottom width. Be sure to check with a ruler or pencil. Draw side small semicircles. Draw the upper and lower large semicircles.

3. Connect all the semicircles into an ellipse align it as you draw. Make sure the ellipse looks harmonious and changes its shape, use a pencil and an eraser.

4. Draw the bottom ellipse of a jar’s mouth, make the thickness of the jar’s mouth where there is a thread for the lid. Draw in the same way as the first ellipse. Connect the upper and lower ellipse with a straight line.

5. Draw a line at the base of the lower ellipse for convenience. as you can see, the outside of a jar is slightly wider than a jar’s mouth. Expand the outer sides by the same distance, draw straight lines down. be sure to check the distance to be the same on both sides. Connect a jar’s mouth and the outside with S-lines. A jar’s bottom is smaller than a jar’s mouth. Draw the bottom ellipse just like the previous ones. Be sure to keep the same widths of the sides. The width of the bottom ellipse is slightly wider than the top ones. Connect the sides with the bottom with C-lines.

6. Draw the thickness of a jar’s bottom, add the thickness of a jar’s mouth.

7. Draw the water level in the jar, draw a straight line just above the middle of the jar, draw an ellipse as well as the previous ones.

8. Draw a thread on the side of a jar’s mouth with lines.

9. This is a light sketch of a jar and flowers designed for my past work. I strongly advise you if you are in doubt, then make a preliminary sketch with a pencil and see if you like everything about your idea.

That’s it. Happy drawing!
